去年 Github 發表 GitHub Archive Program 和 GitHub Arctic Code Vault 兩項保存計畫,希望保存地球生物的 DNA 數據。近期 Github 把資料儲存在挪威斯瓦爾巴群島的廢棄礦坑。
GitHub 與 Piql 合作,正式把 GitHub 網站 21TB 檔案儲存成 186 卷 PiqlFilm 膠卷,並運送至位於挪威斯瓦爾巴群島,名為 Arctic World Archive 的儲存地點。
挪威斯瓦爾巴群島的廢棄礦坑位於地表下幾百公尺深,即使地面變成焦土,影響也很小;且具極地特有的永久凍土地層,儲存在此的資料能維持千年以上。
除了 GitHub,歐洲太空總署和梵蒂岡圖書館也是 Arctic World Archive 保存計畫的成員,曾分別把探索太空的歷史和珍貴的宗教遺產儲存在這裡。
對 Github 而言,每位開發者都是這項計畫的貢獻者,官方特別設計名為 Arctic Code Vault 的數位獎牌,有參與的開發者都可在個人檔案看到。
